VERMILLION, S.D. – The College of Saint Mary golf team battled tough weather conditions and tough competition Monday in the opening round of the Great Plains Athletic Conference Fall Championships.
The Flames are sitting in seventh place after the first qualifier at The Bluffs Golf Course in Vermillion, S.D. Qualifier #2 will be Tuesday at The Bluffs, while the GPAC Qualifiers #3 and #4 will follow this spring.
"It was difficult playing conditions today – especially for teams that had to tee off later like we did," CSM Coach Keri Rodriguez said. "We battled 39 degree wind chills and sleet. Overall, I'm pleased with how we played."
Briar Cliff University is sitting in first place with a team score of 317. Morningside College is a distance second with 330 and Dakota Wesleyan University is in third with 351.
Other team scores were: Mount Marty College 355, Northwestern College 359, Midland University 360, CSM 370, Doane University 371, Dordt College and Concordia University 383, Hastings College 397.
The leading individual is Arianna Presilla of Briar Cliff with a 5-over par 77.
Rodriguez is hoping the Flames can play better on Tuesday. The tee times have already been pushed back an hour because of a frost delay. The second qualifier will now start at 11 a.m.
"Tomorrow should be better weather-wise, so our scores should reflect that," Rodriguez said.
