McFadden fires one-hitter for first collegiate win

OMAHA, Neb. – Kynzee McFadden will never forget her first collegiate pitching victory.

The College of Saint Mary freshman was one out away from a no-hitter on Wednesday before Casidy Sipek broke it up with a double over the outstretched glove of Adelia Dunlap. McFadden regrouped and induced a flyout to complete her one-hit gem in CSM's 4-0 victory over Peru State College in the second game of its home-opening doubleheader.

The Bobcats fought past CSM 6-5 in eight innings in the opener on a gorgeous day for nonconference softball. Peru State's record is now 6-13 and the Flames' is 5-15.

"Kynzee pitched great,'' CSM Coach Carolyn Todd Bray said. "Super happy to have her get her first collegiate win. How crazy that it was two outs in the seventh and they got their one and only hit?

"If Adelia Dunlap would have maybe been two inches taller, she might have had it. However, she had a great diving catch earlier in the game that saved a big hit, too, so we told Adelia to keep her head up.''

McFadden struck out three and walked three to earn the victory. Indeed, after a walk and an error put two Bobcat runners aboard in the top of the sixth with one out, Dunlap sprinted in and made a diving catch in shallow left to preserve the no-hitter at the time. McFadden then ended the threat by getting a flyout to right field.

In the top of seventh, McFadden got a popout to second and flyout to right to get within one out of the no-hitter. Then Sipek belted one nearly to the left-field fence. Dunlap sprinted back, jumped and reached as far as she could, but the ball landed for a double.

Regardless, Bray was proud of her team's response after a disappointing first-game loss.

"Everything was better,'' Bray said. "Our defense was better. Our pitching was good. Our at-bats were a lot better.''

CSM scored three times in the third inning. Ella Watts doubled and scored on Shaylynn Campbell's single. Maria Perez singled, Maycee Hays walked to load the bases and then Haley Anderson lined a two-run single.

The Flames added an insurance run in the fourth when Watts singled, stole second and scored on Campbell's single, her second hit of the game.

"Happy to bounce back and leave here with a win,'' Bray said.

In the opener, CSM rallied from a 4-1 deficit with a four-run sixth inning to take the lead. A walk, an error and a Watts single loaded bases. Campbell's single brought in a run, as did McFadden's groundout. Perez suicide-squeezed Watts home with a bunt to tie the game, and then Anderson's two-out single put the Flames in front.

However, the Bobcats rallied with single runs in the seventh and eighth to tie it and win it.

Campbell took the tough-luck loss, battling through some untimely errors. Watts finished the opener 3 for 5, while Anderson had two hits and the RBI.

"We beat ourselves -- dropped balls, missed signs, not running out pop flys, balls getting past outfielders, etc.,'' Bray said. "Ella and Haley had good games at the plate, and Maria got two great bunts down, including the suicide.''

CSM is back home on Friday for its first Great Plains Athletic Conference home games, when it meets Dakota Wesleyan University at 3 and 5 p.m.
