Morningside sweeps Flames on the diamond

OMAHA, Neb. – Morningside University beat College of Saint Mary to the punch on Saturday in their Great Plains Athletic Conference softball doubleheader, winning 10-0 in five innings and 9-0 in six innings at the CSM complex.

"It was a tough day for us,'' CSM Coach Carolyn Todd Bray said. "I think we were pretty exhausted from the marathon day on Friday. Plus, with our injuries we are short on depth and that doesn't help when we are playing against one of the top teams in the GPAC.''

In the opener, Adeline Fliege fired a two-hit shutout and the Mustangs (16-12 overall, 7-1 GPAC) scored in every inning.

Freshman Ella Christensen had both of CSM's hits. Bray noted that Christensen is one of the players who is filling in admirably while some others are out with injuries.

In game two, Morningside jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings and went on to the victory.

For CSM (5-19, 1-7), Bray said there were two defensive highlights.

"We had a couple great defensive plays, including a first-and-third out with Maycee (Hays), Kayla Kitzman and Tori Placzek, and a great double play from Kynzee (McFadden) and Morgan Hensch. Ally Lynch and Tori both gave us good innings on the mound.''

Looking at the bigger picture, Bray said, "Kynzee on the mound and Maycee catching were really workhorses for us this weekend.''

Another highlight from Saturday was junior Ella Watts getting her 100th career hit for CSM. In 99 career games with the Flames, Watts is now 100 for 312 at the plate, a .321 batting average.

CSM's next scheduled games are Wednesday, with a home doubleheader at 3 and 5 p.m. against GPAC foe Doane University.
