FREMONT, Neb. – Midland University, ranked 22nd in the nation, rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to win game two 8-3 and complete a Great Plains Athletic Conference softball sweep of College of Saint Mary on Wednesday at Chaplains Field.
The Warriors blanked the Flames 3-0 in the opener and improved to 26-10 overall and 8-2 in GPAC play. CSM dropped to 7-21 and 3-9.
"It was a disappointing day for us,'' CSM Coach Carolyn Todd Bray said. "We thought we could have gotten one today. It was great to go up 3-0 right away, but then defensive mistakes hurt us. We struggled with some of the basic stuff today.''
In the first inning of game two, the Flames jumped on top. Ella Watts singled and Shaylynn Campbell worked a nine-pitch walk. Kynzee McFadden drove in Watts with a single. After a Maria Perez walk and a double play, Haley Anderson delivered a two-run double for a 3-0 lead.
However the Warriors chipped away, tying it in the fourth before tacking on two in the fifth and three more in the sixth.
Watts and McFadden both finished 3 for 4 with a run scored, while Campbell went 2 for 3 as the Flames outhit their opponent 9-8.
Bray said leftfielder Adelia Dunlap was the defensive standout of the game.
"Adelia had an absolutely awesome game in left field,'' she said. "She played lights out.''
The opener also marked the 2026 debut of Amber Kosmicki, who shared the team lead in RBIs last season. She is returning from an offseason injury.
"It was great to have Amber back,'' Bray said.
The story of the opener was Midland pitcher Campbell Petrick, who threw a no-hitter while striking out three and walking two.
CSM's Campbell shut out Midland in five of her six innings of work, but Midland tallied three times in the second inning.
"They outhit us, but we also made a couple of mistakes that let them have one good inning,'' Bray said. "The wind was tough today. Adelia made a couple of nice catches in left field, and I thought Shay pitched well.''
CSM is scheduled to return home Saturday for a GPAC doubleheader with Briar Cliff University, with 1 and 3 p.m. starts.
