Prairie Wolves strike late to beat Flames
LINCOLN, Neb. – College of Saint Mary took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth, but Nebraska Wesleyan University rallied for a 3-1 nonconference softball victory on Monday at the Sandhills Global Youth Complex.
"It was a disappointing loss,'' CSM Coach Carolyn Todd Bray said. "We didn't feel like our energy was where it needed to be. We wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to play a nonconference game and get some good reps and good at-bats in, and we seemed a little flat.''
The Flames (7-22) opened the scoring in the top of the fifth when Victoria Placzek tripled to right field and scored on Kayla Kitzman's single to right-center.
The Prairie Wolves (11-16) tied it in the bottom of the inning, then went ahead for good in the sixth on Jenna Kimberling's solo homer.
Defensively for CSM, Kayla Reed turned in a pair of impressive catches in center field battling a tough wind, while Shaylynn Campbell and Kynzee McFadden kept the Flames in the game in the circle. Campbell allowed four hits and three earned runs in five innings of work, while McFadden allowed no runs in one inning.
"Shaylynn and Kynzee both pitched well, I thought,'' Bray said. "They really struggled against Shay for the first four innings.''
Ella Watts went 2 for 3 at the plate for the Flames.
CSM returns to GPAC play on Wednesday at home with a doubleheader against Briar Cliff University. Game times are 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
*CSM won the JV game by a score of 5-4.
