Dordt overcomes Kosmicki’s power in sweep

OMAHA, Neb. – Despite three-run homers from Amber Kosmicki in each game, College of Saint Mary was unable Friday to withstand the offensive prowess of Dordt University.

The Defenders, receiving votes in the latest NAIA national poll, swept the Flames 14-3 and 11-3 in a pair of five-inning Great Plains Athletic Conference indoor softball games at the American State Bank Sports Complex.

"It's the best Dordt team we've seen over the years,'' CSM Coach Carolyn Todd Bray said. "They can hit and their pitchers are really good. The most impressive part is the adjustments they made. They had big hits on all different types of pitches, different speeds and off different pitchers.''

Kosmicki provided CSM's offensive heroics, blasting a three-run shot in the top of the first inning of the first game and then another three-run round-tripper to put the visitors ahead 3-2 in the third inning of the second game. She also had a double in the opener.

"Amber had an awesome day!'' Bray said. "It's been impressive to see her battle back from her injury and play like she's playing. She also caught her first game of the season and did well there, too.''

In five games since her return, Kosmicki has three homers and a double among her four hits.

Despite her production, Dordt (31-10 overall, 12-4 GPAC) had more than enough offensive firepower to overtake the Flames. They slammed four homers of their own – three by Chloe Kreuz, who ran her season total to a school-record 17 – and now have a nation-leading 52 on the season.

"They flat-out won the games today,'' Bray said. "We couldn't match them at the plate. I thought all out pitchers really worked hard, but I want to give an extra shoutout to Kynzee McFadden, who was locating her ball the best I've seen all season.''

CSM dropped to 7-26 overall and 3-13 in GPAC play.

"I was proud of our ladies for staying focused and battling until the end,'' Bray said.

The Flames return on Sunday for a GPAC doubleheader at Waldorf University in Forest City, Iowa, with game times set for 1 and 3 p.m.
