Flames notch first back-to-back GPAC wins in same year since ’19

OMAHA, Neb. – For the first time in nearly six years, College of Saint Mary has won consecutive Great Plains Athletic Conference basketball games in the same season.

Jai'La Porter scored 19 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds as the Flames dispatched Midland University 66-51 on Tuesday at the Lied Fitness Center.

CSM followed up on Saturday's 73-67 win at Waldorf University. The last time the Flames won back-to-back GPAC games in the same season was Dec. 12 and 14 of 2019, when they beat Doane and Briar Cliff.

On Saturday at Waldorf, College of Saint Mary let a 16-point lead drop with 90 seconds left dwindle to five before hanging on.

"At about the four-minute mark, I said, 'Do not let this be a repeat of Waldorf,''' CSM Coach Natalie Miller said. "I was like, 'You have to lock in and finish out the games.' I think we did a phenomenal job of turning that corner. We took another step, and I was very proud of us that way.''

CSM stretched its lead to 50-27 late in the third when Lexi Barnes assisted on a Madelyn Gaughen basket. However, the Warriors chipped away and got within 56-46 with 2:52 remaining in the game after Addy Offutt's basket.

The Flames composed themselves and outscored Midland 10-5 the rest of the way.

CSM did it with defense, limiting the Warriors to 33.8% field-goal shooting (22 of 65).

"Holding a team to single digits in two quarters, that's huge for us,'' Miller said.

Kathryn Gaughen had the primary responsibility on Midland's Jenna Weber, who entered fourth in the GPAC in scoring at 18.3 points per game. Weber managed 14, but it came on 6-of-19 shooting.

"Kat did a phenomenal job guarding (Weber),'' Miller said.

The 5-foot-6 Porter was all over the defensive boards, grabbing 12 of her 15 on that end. She also made 9 of 9 at the line.

"Jai'La had a phenomenal game,'' Miller said.

Madelyn Gaughen added 13 points and nine rebounds, while Barnes scored a career-high 10 and Haley Debuse pitched in nine points and six rebounds.

"I'm definitely happy with this, heading into Thanksgiving,'' Miller said.

CSM returns to action on Dec. 3 when it hosts Mount Marty University in GPAC action.
