No. 2 Dordt handles Flames

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Dordt University showed why it's the No. 2-ranked team in the nation in NAIA women's basketball, defeating College of Saint Mary 100-32 on Wednesday in Great Plains Athletic Conference action at DeWitt Gymnasium.

"We just couldn't stop them in transition,'' CSM Coach Natalie Miller said. "Towards the end of the game, we did a better job moving the ball and getting downhill, but we struggled early with them collapsing on everything in the paint.''

Dordt, the two-time defending national champion, improved to 15-1 overall and 9-1 in GPAC play, while CSM dropped to 3-14 and 2-9.

The Defenders raced to a 22-0 lead in the first quarter and led 61-15 at the half. Dordt made 14 of 31 (45.2%) from 3-point range for the game and was led by Gracie Schoonhoven with 20 points.

For the Flames, sisters Madelyn and Kathryn Gaughen led the way with eight points apiece. For Kathryn Gaughen it was a career-high in points, and the freshman made the first two 3-pointers of her career. Madelyn Gaughen led the rebounding category with seven.

CSM returns home Saturday to play Northwestern College in a 2 p.m. GPAC game at the Lied Fitness Center.

"Looking forward, we're wanting to keep the creativity to score and energy we had throughout the game,'' Miller said.
