Quick-starting Hastings defeats Flames

HASTINGS, Neb. – Hastings College forced eight College of Saint Mary turnovers in the first quarter on Wednesday, leading to a 31-13 lead after 10 minutes.

The Broncos went on to post a 99-58 Great Plains Athletic Conference basketball victory over the Flames at Farrell Arena.

Macy Bryant sank all three of her 3-point attempts in the opening period and finished the first quarter with 15 points. Hastings wasn't threatened from there, improving to 14-6 overall and 10-4 in GPAC play.

CSM dropped to 3-17 and 2-12. The Flames finished with 26 turnovers, leading to 32 Bronco points.

"We handled their press well, but turned over the ball a lot in the half court,'' CSM Coach Natalie Miller said. "They are aggressive defenders, and we gave them a lot of fastbreak points.''

For the Flames, Jai'La Porter and Haley Debuse led the way with 10 points each. Debuse shared the assist lead with four, while Porter grabbed four rebounds.

Freda Moore pitched in nine points and Meghan Keil also had nine, on 3-of-8 3-point shooting. They combined for seven rebounds. Madelyn Gaughen led the rebounding category with seven in addition to scoring seven points.

"We felt like we attacked well, so we want to keep doing that consistently,'' Miller said.

The Flames have four of their next five games at home, starting Saturday with a 3 p.m. GPAC game against Dakota Wesleyan University.
