Concordia rides pressure defense to victory
OMAHA, Neb. – Concordia University's full-court pressure was too much for College of Saint Mary to overcome on Wednesday night.
The 11th-ranked Bulldogs forced 36 turnovers and scored 39 points off those turnovers to defeat the Flames 88-42 in Great Plains Athletic Conference basketball action at the Lied Fitness Center.
"We turned the ball over way too much,'' CSM Coach Natalie Miller said. "Concordia is tough because they speed you up for 40 minutes, even in the half court. It's tough to play fast in the press and not either rush in the half or slow down too much.''
Concordia improved to 20-5 overall and 15-4 in GPAC play, while CSM dipped to 3-22 and 2-17 after dropping its final home game.
For the Flames, Jai'La Porter led the team in points (9), rebounds (11) and assists (4). Madelyn Gaughen added eight points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.
"Defensively, I felt we did a good job scrambling, but didn't finish the job with rebounding,'' Miller said.
The Flames trailed 7-6 after Kathryn Gaughen's layup at the 3:41 mark of the first quarter, however it took them nearly five minutes to score again. Concordia scored the next 15 points to lead 22-6, and it didn't look back, building a 41-10 lead at the intermission.
CSM returns to action Saturday with a 5 p.m. game at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa.
"Looking ahead to Northwestern, I want to continue building on our defense and keeping that intensity for the entirety of the game,'' Miller said.
