Flames have 'great day on the lanes'

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The College of Saint Mary bowling team had a strong showing at the Five Seasons Classic Saturday. The Flames are currently in eighth place out of 17 teams.

"Today was a great day on the lanes as a team," CSM Coach Corrinne Johnson said. "I was pleased with their bowling. They communicated well with each other, were having fun and were being loud.

"I'm happy with where we are sitting at going into tomorrow's Baker games."

The Flames had 4,105 total pins with game scores of 758, 885, 838, 846 and 778.

"The format for this tournament is a win/loss point system," Johnson said. "If you win you get one point. We won three of five today during regular team games. Tomorrow we will bowl five sets of four Baker games. At the end of each four games the total pin count wins who we are paired with. After the fourth round we will have position round and be paired with the team in order of win/loss ration and bowl the last set. The more wins over loses takes the tournament."

On Saturday, CSM lost the first game, but rallied to win the second, third and fourth games before dropping the fifth.

"Our first game against Augustana was rough," Johnson said. "We were having trouble finding the line and missed multiple spares. But we regrouped, made some changes, got loud and fired off our best set of the day beating Luther 885-707."

Hannah O'Neal had CSM's high game of the day with a 233 and Johnson said Alexandria Ford's 177 was also crucial to achieve the win.

The Flames used that momentum to beat Waldorf in a nail-biter as Madison Barnes had her high game of the day with a 198 to help secure the win.

CSM beat Iowa Central CC in the fourth game with the help of a 194 from Barnes, a 180 from Jennica Soar and a 168 from Abigail Rosloniec.

College of Saint Mary lost to Clarke in the fifth game. Barnes had a team-high 184 in that round.

Mount Mercy University leads the way after a perfect 5-0 day with 4,963 total pins.

The tournament continues Sunday.

"I am confident that we will add more wins in the Baker matches putting us up higher on the finish list," Johnson said.
