Flames finish strong on Day 1 at Leatherneck Classic
ROCKFORD, Ill. – The College of Saint Mary bowling team faced tough competition and a power outage Saturday in the opening day of the Leatherneck Classic.
The Flames bowled games of 798, 785, 775, 744 and 801 to finish with a total pinfall of 3,903. CSM is sitting in 22nd place out of 28 teams.
Judson University leads the pack with 4,770 total pins. Calumet College of St. Joseph is in second with 4,739 and Lindenwood University sits in third with 4,717.
"The ladies bowled great today," CSM Coach Corrinne Johnson said.
Madison Barnes led the Flames in the first game with her high game of 193. Johnson said the second game was a struggle finding a good line for most, except for Hannah O'Neal who fired off a 208 for her high game and the highest game Saturday for the team.
The Flames "started leveling out" in the third game as Abigail Rosloniec had a high game of 189 to help the squad finished with a 775.
"We got cold in the fourth game as we had a long break and we struggled with our spare game," Johnson said. "We finished with our lowest game total for the day."
But Johnson said the Flames regrouped, got loud and found the end of day energy as they were stringing strikes and spares in the fifth game. Things got interesting as CSM had a short break due to a power outage and waiting for the lanes to reset.
College of Saint Mary went on to roll its highest block of the day with an 801. Jennica Soar had her day high with a 198.
"Overall, we were aiming for 15th place or higher to end the day," Johnson said. "But we bowled consistently. We have confidence going into tomorrow's Baker games and plan to move up a couple of spots."
