Strong start helps CSM bowlers
COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – What a start!
The College of Saint Mary bowling team rolled an 862 in the first game to open up competition in the MIBC #2 Tournament Saturday. That was the high score among all women's teams at the Bowlero and had the Flames sitting in first place.
"The team bowled well today," CSM Coach Corrinne Johnson said. "We started the day with an 862 series placing us in first place after Game 1."
CSM is currently sitting in fifth place with 3,877 total pins from the first day.
Coe College leads the pack with 4,409, while Waldorf University is in second with 4,247 and Iowa Central Community College sits in third with 4,077. Other team scores were Wartburg College 4,001; Luther College 3,846; Hawkeye Community College 3,593; Iowa Western Community College 3,490 and Iowa State University 3,395.
After CSM's impressive Game 1, the Flames struggled with the lane change and rolled a 730 in the second game. CSM had a 791 in Game 3, a 756 in Game 4 and a 738 in Game 5.
"After moving lanes we struggled with spares in the second game and that dropped us to fourth place," Johnson said. "But we made a comeback in Game 3 and stayed consistent in Game 4. We lost our stamina in Game 5 and worked to finish out the day in fifth place."
Hannah O'Neal had CSM's top individual performance with an 870 (188, 167, 189, 184, 142) which gave her 10th place individually – just 36 pins away from making the all-tournament team.
Madison Barnes had the Flames' top game of the day with a 191 in Game 1.
"We are out of third place by 200 pins going into Bakers tomorrow which is possible to make up with some strong games," Johnson said.
Competition continues Sunday at 8:45 a.m. in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
