Flames 5th, Freeman 8th after day one at Mt. Marty
YANKTON, S.D. – The College of Saint Mary golf team turned in a strong opening effort on Thursday, ending fifth of 14 teams after the first day of the two-day Mount Marty Invitational at Fox Run Golf Course.
CSM shot 328 on Thursday, behind only Morningside (300), Doane (318), Concordia (320) and Doane (320), and just ahead of sixth-place Dordt (329).
"This was a pretty good start to our season, and for the most part, I'm pleased with the scores today,'' CSM Coach Keri Rodriguez said.
Individually for the Flames, Katie Freeman carded a round of 80, good for a tie for eighth place entering day two. Freeman sank three birdies during a five-hole stretch from hole No. 14 through No. 18.
Erika Headlee was one stroke back at 81, in a tie for 17th,
"Katie and Erika played exceptionally well,'' Rodriguez said. "With a little fine tuning, the rest can keep up.''
Victoria Farkas was just one more shot back after an 82, in 20th. Emily Faubel carded an 85 for 32nd, while Sofia Chavez stands tied for 36th after an 88.
CSM begins competition at 10 a.m. on Friday.
"Tomorrow's course is much harder, and historically, scores have been higher on day two of this tournament,'' Rodriguez said. "The goal is to play smart and hold on to our spot or even move up. If we avoid those blow-up holes, we can do it.''
