Flames hold on to third at York
YORK, Neb. – The College of Saint Mary golf team finished third in the York Fall Invite Tuesday at York Country Club, and learned a few things along the way.
"I know everyone gave their best effort, but some course-management issues held us back from scoring better,'' CSM Coach Keri Rodriguez said. "We'll focus on making smarter decisions on the course as we prepare for our final (fall) event next week.''
Park University (Mo.) shot a 336-324—660 to win the event. The Concordia University 'A' team was second with a 338-342—680, while CSM placed third with a 347-350—697. The other finishers were Mount Marty University with a 349-353—702, Hastings College with a 371-369—740 and the Concordia 'B' team with a 407-407—814.
"We held on to third place, but it was a struggle,'' Rodriguez said. "This course definitely challenged us, especially with its lightning-fast greens.''
Individually, Victoria Farkas was the top Flame with an 81-85—166, good for fourth place. Katie Freeman tied for ninth with an 88-84—172, while Emily Faubel was 15th with an 87-92—179. Erika Headlee placed 19th at 91-90—181 and Sofia Chavez was 20th at 95-91—186.
"Sofia summed it up best,'' Rodriguez said. "She came in with a shellshocked look on her face and said, 'That was the hardest course I've ever played.'''
CSM closes its fall schedule on Oct. 6 and 7 in the Nebraska Intercollegiate at the Fremont Golf Club in Fremont, Neb.
