Farkas, Flames enjoy strong opening day

LINCOLN, Neb. – Led by sophomore Victoria Farkas, College of Saint Mary turned in an outstanding opening day of the two-day Concordia Spring Invite golf meet at Highlands Golf Course.

Farkas fired rounds of 81 and 77 for a total of 158, good for fifth place out of the 65 competitors and just four strokes behind leader Kamryn Zuniga of Morningside University (154).

"Victoria led the charge with an outstanding second round,'' CSM Coach Keri Rodriguez said.

The Flames posted team scores of 339 and 332 for a total of 671 to end the first day in fourth place in the 11-team field.

"I'm so proud of this team for powering through windy, cold conditions over 36 holes today,'' Rodriguez said. "Tough day, tougher group.''

Morningside led at 632 and was followed by Doane University (653), Iowa Western Community College (654), CSM, Concordia University (673), Hastings College (684), Briar Cliff University (686), Northwestern College (707), Mount Marty University (725), the Doane 'B' team (729) and Midland University (805).

Also for the Flames, Katie Freeman is tied for 17th after an 81-88—169; Emily Faubel is tied for 27th after an 88-84—172; Sofia Chavez also is tied for 27th after an 89-83—172; and Erika Headlee is 50th after a 97-91—188.

The teams will play two more rounds on Wednesday.

"Tomorrow will be a dogfight,'' Rodriguez said. "We're going to give it everything we've got.''
