Flames 4th after day one in Council Bluffs
COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – College of Saint Mary ended day one in fourth place among the seven teams competing in the two-day Iowa Western Spring Invite at Bent Tree Golf Club.
The Flames shot 353, trailing Iowa Western Community College (327), Doane University (338) and Hastings College (352). After CSM are Mount Marty University (367), Nebraska Wesleyan University (394) and Southeast Community College (404).
"Windy conditions, lightning-fast greens and tough pin placements made for a challenging day on the course,'' CSM Coach Keri Rodriguez said. "Scores were high across the board.''
Individually, Victoria Farkas led the Flames after the first round with an 83, which is in a tie for sixth. She had two birdies on the day.
Emily Faubel was 10th after an 86, while Sofia Chavez was tied for 15th after a 91. Katie Freeman was tied for 19th after a 93, while Frede Weiss was tied for 20th after a 94.
"Blow-up holes continue to hurt us,'' Rodriguez said. "We need to focus on playing smart golf – thinking ahead and positioning the ball to set up the next shot for success. I expect a stronger performance tomorrow. The effort is there – we just need to tighten things up and make better decisions on the course.''
The competitors will play another 18 holes on Tuesday.
