YANKTON, S.D. – "Breathe in, breathe out."
That's what College of Saint Mary freshman Jimena Estrada Gómez (FR/Omaha, Neb.) told herself when she was called upon to take the penalty kick for the Flames – twice. The freshman converted on both for two goals and also added an assist in CSM's 3-2 win over Mount Marty University Wednesday.
"I was freaking out because I missed the last PK I took in high school," Gómez said. "Breathe in, breathe out – that's what I told myself. It's about placing it, not power. I went to the right side both times."
Gómez got her first goal at 29:46 on the penalty kick to put the Flames up 1-0.
Teammate Abbie Anderson (SO/Omaha, Neb.) then scored at 31:11 with an assist from Gómez to give CSM a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
"Abbie made a third run, Jimena slotted the ball in and Abbie finished," CSM Coach Jordan Irsik said.
But the Lancers found their way back into the game in the second half.
Mount Marty scored at 52:33 and 55:12 to tie the game 2-2.
Gómez then got the game winner – on another penalty kick – at 89:39 to give the Flames the win.
"We were able to control the game for most of the night, except for about three minutes," Irsik said. "Our letdown hurt us. But we'll take the three points in conference and move forward."
Gabby Felker (JR/Omaha, Neb.) had one save in goal for CSM in the opening half, while teammate Alivia Schade (SO/Kearney, Neb.) tallied four saves in the second half.
CSM improves to 2-1 in the GPAC and 5-2-1 overall. Mount Marty falls to 0-3, 1-4-2. CSM plays again Saturday at home at 1 p.m. vs. Dakota Wesleyan University.
