Flames get clutch win over University of Jamestown

OMAHA, Neb. – Heading into the final stretch of the season, the College of Saint Mary soccer team needed a big win Saturday to gain some quality conference points.

The Flames came up clutch with a 2-1 victory over the University of Jamestown in Great Plains Athletic Conference play.

"What a day," CSM Coach Jordan Irsik said. "I'm so proud of the ladies and their resilience today."

The Jimmies actually took the early lead with an unassisted goal from Hannah Hynek at 11:54. Jamestown held on to that advantage until just three seconds remained in the first half.

CSM's Abbie Anderson sent in a corner kick with 20 seconds left on the clock. Jimmies' keeper Tea Pence tipped the ball up and CSM's Marissa Ring finished with a header over the top of the crowd at 44:57.

"We definitely struggled in the first half with Jamestown's style," Irsik said. "But we made adjustments and were able to get a goal with the clock winding down. That's a level of fight that comes from their leadership and confidence."

The Flames clinched the win with the only goal of the second half at 61:32. CSM's Libbie Brezenski dribbled the right side and got herself into the box. She played a shot that Pence deflected into the crowd out front and Leslie Donis was able to finish for the goal.

"Starting the second half was again a struggle for us," Irsik said. "But the ladies stayed composed and broke their attack down. I can't say enough about the leadership of our defensive group in those moments. They have played as a unit all season and that showed today."

CSM outshot the Jimmies 14-11 in the game and Flames' goalkeeper Alivia Schade finished with four saves.

The Flames improve to 5-3-3 in the GPAC and 7-4-5 overall. Jamestown drops to 4-4-2, 4-7-3. CSM's final regular season game is at home Wednesday at 3 p.m. vs. Morningside University.
