Flames swimmers start well at Warrior Invitational
FREMONT, Neb. – College of Saint Mary won three of the six events it participated in to highlight an outstanding first day of the three-day Warrior Invitational Thursday at the Dillon Family Aquatic Center.
The Flames were in second place in the five-team event after day one. The University of Nebraska at Kearney led with 494 points, followed by CSM (328), Iowa Western Community College (241), Midland University (126) and Iowa Lakes Community College (67).
"The team's bringing the heat this meet!" CSM Coach Liz Germonprez said.
Freshman Grace Biddle was the Flames' individual winner, capturing the 200 IM in 2:20.27.
In the 800 free relay, the team of Biddle, Isabella Promes, Hannah Ferguson and Kylee Brown blazed home for the win by nearly six seconds in 8:21.37.
And in the 200 medley relay, the quartet of Jaidyn Vanschoiack, Brown, Ferguson and Promes won by nearly two seconds in 1:53.35.
The Flames also grabbed a pair of seconds. The team of Biddle, Promes, Vanschoiack and Brown finished .29 behind Nebraska-Kearney in the 200 free relay, clocking 1:41.81. And Brown was the runner-up in the 500 freestyle in a season-best 5:22.19.
In the first two sessions, the Flames recorded eight personal-bests: Biddle in the 200 IM prelims and finals, along with Promes, Vanschoiack, Olivia Poole, Ferguson, Chloe Hale and Juliet Balman in the 50 free.
CSM also turned in three NAIA national B-cuts: Brown in the 500 freestyle, along with Promes and Vanschoiack in the 50 free.
"The team is racing and cheering and throwing down great swims every session,'' Germonprez said.
Action continues on Friday and Saturday at the same venue.
