Flames finish ‘amazing’ meet in Fremont
FREMONT, Neb. – The College of Saint Mary swim team capped a terrific performance at the Warrior Invitational with 14 personal bests on Saturday at the Dillon Family Aquatic Center.
The Flames finished second in the five-team, three-day event with 906 points, trailing only NCAA Division II University of Nebraska at Kearney with 1,288. Iowa Western Community College (641), host Midland University (369) and Iowa Lakes Community College (111) rounded out the field.
More than their team score, the Flames consistently swam season and personal bests to the delight of coach Liz Germonprez.
"It's hard to even begin to describe how well this team performed Saturday!'' she said. "On the final day of the meet, we had 14 personal-best swims and 10 happened in the final session. I can't tell you how amazing that is in a six-session, three-day meet. This team was phenomenal.''
The final day featured one event victory and three runner-up finishes.
In the 200 backstroke, sophomore Chloe Hale claimed the win in a season-best 2:14.12, just ahead of second-place teammate Grace Biddle (2:15.78).
Hannah Ferguson placed second in the 200 butterfly in 2:26.35, and Kylee Brown grabbed second in the 1,650 freestyle in 18:34.66. Brown's time is a deep NAIA national B-cut.
Senior Jaidyn Vanschoiack picked up a third in the 100 freestyle (56.13) and swam on the third-place 400 free relay (3:45.44), putting the finishes on a terrific three-day performance.
"If I had to pick a swimmer of the meet, Jaidyn had the meet of her life,'' Germonprez said. "She swam the kind of meet that athletes dream about! Personal bests every individual event, clutch relay performer. Just amazing.''
Another example of CSM's excellence was junior Juliet Balman, who shaved five seconds off her personal best from her freshman year in the 200 butterfly to place sixth (2:40.89).
"Every single athlete on this team came ready to perform,'' Germonprez said. "This group of women showed up, came together, raced and simply had an amazing meet.''
