Flames perform well at Doane indoor meet

CRETE, Neb. – Three winning efforts and four second-place finishes highlighted an outstanding performance by the College of Saint Mary women Saturday in the Scott Nisely Memorial Classic indoor track meet hosted by Doane University.

Doane and Hastings of the NAIA's Great Plains Athletic Conference joined the Flames, along with Iowa Western Community College from the junior college ranks.

"We had a very solid meet coming out of the holiday break,'' CSM Coach Steve Gordon said. "It's a known occurrence for track and field teams to face a slight dip in performance over the holidays because the normal routine is disrupted for a long period of time. So the coaching staff and I are pleased at what we were able to do today.''

Freshman Kara Muller turned in two of the three gold-medal performances, winning the mile in 5:41.89 and 3,000 meters in 11:27.64. Sophomore Mira Fosmer reigned in the 800 with a winning time of 2:29.50.

Three of the second-place finishes came in individual events, as Carly Henderson grabbed second in the 600 (1:42.34), Josie Karnik was second in the 800 (2:39.74) and Savannah Horne ended second in the 200 (27.36).

The other runner-up effort came in the 4x400 relay, with Mackenzie Stanley, Ava Hilger, Ciara Williams and Carly Henderson joining forces to finish in 4:21.53.

"Our first-year/freshman athletes stepped up in a major way,'' Gordon said. "Four Flames in the 60-meter finals is a first for any meet ever. That is due to quality training and performances, and team growth in numbers.''

The Flames also turned in six third-place finishes: Horne in the 60 final (8.04), Autumn Simons in the 800 (2:43.95), Kaitlyn Thalman in the mile (6:25.94), Becka Karnik in the 3,000 (11:55.25), Mikaiya Rodgers in the long jump (5.23m; 17-2) and Claire Caspersen in the weight throw (15.25; 50- ½). Caspersen's mark was a program record.

"Claire continues to set a very high bar in her new event,'' Gordon said.
