Flames take 5th in 4x800, earn All-America honors

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – College of Saint Mary's "Fantastic Four'' came through Friday with one more memorable performance, and it resulted in All-America honors.

Freshman Carly Henderson, freshman Olivia Elbert, sophomore Mira Fosmer and freshman Kara Muller turned in a fifth-place finish in the 4x800 meter relay final at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships, setting a program record for the second time in two days.

The Flames clocked 9:11.09 at the Alachua County Sports & Events Center, which was 2.31 seconds faster than Thursday's prelim time of 9:13.40. CSM's qualifying time of 9:25.20 was also a program record, but the Flames smashed that mark by 14.11 seconds on Friday, as the quartet became the third, fourth, fifth and sixth All-Americans in program history.

"This group of young ladies is bonded in a way that is very rare,'' CSM Coach Steve Gordon Jr. said. "Sure, there's talent there, but I wish everyone could have seen the camaraderie and real friendship, the moments of lifting each other up and bolstering each other's confidence, to further rely on each other in the tough moments they knew were coming. That's amazing. That's how we are built as a team.''

Leadoff runner Henderson stayed back early, but moved up to fourth at 600 meters and passed the baton to Elbert in fourth after a superb 2:17.10 split. Elbert dropped briefly to fifth with 200 meters left, then poured it on to move up to third when she handed to Fosmer after a sizzling 2:16.93 split.

Fosmer maintained the third position throughout her entire third leg, running 2:18.43 and then handing to Muller. Facing some of the top middle-distance runners in the country, Muller showed grit in remaining in third through the first 600 meters. Two talented anchor runners passed her on the final lap, but a 2:18.63 anchor carry proved Muller could hang with the best at the 800 distance, even though she's spent more time at the longer distances.

Henderson and Muller qualified for the national cross country meet as freshmen under head cross country coach Derek Fey, who handles the distance runners as a track assistant.

"All credit to the young ladies and to Coach Fey,'' Gordon said. "This is a continuation of the success the cross country team had in the fall.''
