‘Best opening weekend’ for CSM indoor team
WAYNE, Neb. – Freshman Imani Skanes won the triple jump and turned in two other top-three finishes as the College of Saint Mary had an outstanding start to the indoor track and field season on Friday at the WSC Wildcat Opener on the Dr. Ron Holt Track.
In addition to the host school and CSM, Briar Cliff, Morningside, Mount Marty, Northwestern and Sioux Falls also were in action, and Flames coach Steve Gordon Jr. was thrilled with the results.
"While we are still growing and aspiring to the level that we'd like to be at, I can honestly say that this was the best opening weekend the program has ever had,'' he said. "Extremely strong performances for this time of year, especially when we have not yet turned the corner in our training to be competition-sharp.''
In the triple jump, CSM went 1-2-5. Skanes soared a program-record 11.15 meters (36 feet, 7 inches) to win. Gozie Okafor was a quarter-inch behind in second at 11.14 (36-6¾), the No. 2 performance in school history. And Allison Isaacson was fifth at 10.89 (35-8 ¾).
Skanes took second in the long jump in her first collegiate competition, going 5.43 (17-9¾). She also placed third in the 60 meters, shattering the program record of 7.86 in the prelims, going 7.74, and taking third in the finals at 7.76.
In the mile, Kara Muller placed second in 5:15.02, setting an indoor personal best and breaking her own program record in the process.
Syd'ney Birch-George turned in an outstanding day in the throws, placing fourth in the weight throw at 15.29 (50-2) and fifth in the shot put at 12.07 (39-7¼). Both performances are No. 2 all-time in school history, and her shot put was a personal best.
In the shot, Birch-George and seventh-place Tavia Williams both led all NAIA entries, and in the weight throw Birch-George and seventh-place Clare Ullery both led all NAIA entries.
In the 60 hurdles prelims, Rayna Apley ran a personal-best and program record 9.83 to place 12th. In the 200, Mackenzie Stanley ran a personal-best 27.04, No. 2 on the all-time list, and finished ninth.
"The team set several new program records and once again rewrote our program top-10 performances in just about every event we competed in,'' Gordon said. "I could not be happier or more proud of where we're at going into Christmas break.
"We continue to set a new standard for what to expect from CSM Flames track & field.''
