Skanes, Elbert shine at Nisley Invite
CRETE, Neb. – Big days by Imani Skanes and Olivia Elbert headlined an outstanding performance on Saturday by the College of Saint Mary indoor track & field team at the Nisley Invite inside the Fuhrer Field House on the campus of Doane University.
Skanes, a freshman from Omaha, won three events – the 60 meters, long jump and triple jump. Two of the three victories resulted in national-qualifying performances:
In the long jump, Skanes soared 5.86 meters (19 feet, 2¾ inches), which breaks her own program record, is a national 'A' qualifying mark, as well as the No. 1 mark in the Great Plains Athletic Conference this year and the No. 2 mark nationally.
Skanes won the triple jump with a leap of 11.65 (38-2¾), which is a new program record, meets the national 'B' qualifying standard and is No. 9 nationally.
Skanes also won the 60 in 7.89. In that event, Mikaiya Rodgers (8.09) and Mackenzie Stanley (8.21) moved up to No. 5 and No. 7 in program history, respectively.
Elbert, a sophomore from Omaha, made history by becoming the first CSM distance runner to qualify for the national meet. She won the 1,000 in a program-record 2:59.94, meeting the national 'B' standard.
"I'm super proud of Olivia,'' said Derek Fey, who leads the cross country program and is a track assistant. "Getting her out for cross country has really changed her entire perspective on racing middle distance. Last year, the final half of her races weren't as strong as I knew she was, but getting that mileage in the past eight months has really turned her into a different runner. The last 200 meters of her last two races have looked powerful.''
The Flames had five runner-up efforts.
Gozie Okafor finished two centimeters behind Skanes in the triple jump in 11.63 (38-2). That improved her already-established 'B' standard, was a personal best and moves her to 10th nationally.
Rodgers improved to a season-best 5.60 (18-4½) in the long jump to place second. Her mark was one centimeter off the 'B' standard and moves up to 13th in the nation.
"The Flames Jump Squad was on fire – pun intended!'' CSM Coach Steve Gordon Jr. said. "They put on a real show!''
Also, Josie Karnik placed second in the 800 (2:28.50) and Kara Muller added runner-up finishes in the mile (5:24.70) and 3,000 (11:01.06).
"A remarkable all-around performance for the Flames,'' Gordon said. "The distance crew really did a great job transitioning their cross country success into very good times on the track, now that they've had a month to get into their various competitive distances on the track.''
