CSM ties for 4th; best-ever finish at GPAC indoor meet

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Another GPAC Indoor Track & Field meet, another school-record team finish for the College of Saint Mary.

The Flames set a program record for the indoor meet by tying for fourth in the Great Plains Athletic Conference's showcase indoor event on Saturday at the Dordt Recreation Center. Last year, CSM set the previous best finish with a fifth-place effort.

Dordt University nipped Doane University 200-199 by top honors. Concordia University was third with 90, while CSM and Northwestern College shared fourth with 56.5 points apiece. Hastings College (40) was sixth and was followed by Morningside University (30), Mount Mary University (28.5), Midland University (25.5), Waldorf University (13) and Dakota Wesleyan University (2).

"It's one thing to take honors when you're on top of the world, but today we succeeded on a tough day,'' CSM Coach Steve Gordon Jr. said. "Not everything was perfect or personal bests, but we stayed the course and competed like we absolutely belonged in the conversation.

"A track & field championship meet is the truest test of a program. Imagine a one-day, winner-take-all sports carnival, where all that matters is that moment, that day. The GPAC is arguably the toughest conference in the nation, and we went heads up with powerhouse teams two and three times our size.''

Freshman Imani Skanes was the lone conference champion for the Flames, capturing the long jump at 5.91 meters (19 feet, 4¾ inches). The top eight finishers in individual events and top three relays earned All-GPAC honors, and Skanes earned two more all-conference honors, placing third in the triple jump and fifth in the 60 meters.

Runner-up finishes went to Olivia Elbert in the 1,000 and the 4x800 relay team of Carly Henderson, Kara Muller, Mira Fosmer and Olivia Elbert.

Muller also placed third in the mile, while Henderson placed fifth in the mile and Gozie Okafor grabbed fifth in the triple jump.

Rayna Apley tied for sixth in the high jump. Muller added a seventh in the 3,000 and Allison Isaacson placed seventh in the triple jump. Kiley Craft added an eighth for the final all-conference honor in the mile.

"Proud is an understatement,'' Gordon said. "This was a total team effort — from sprints and jumps to distance, we are beginning to really know what we are capable of as individuals and as a team."
