Skanes breaks magical 20-foot barrier; 2 other program records fall
KEARNEY, Neb. – Freshman Imani Skanes broke the magical 20-foot barrier with an NAIA-leading long jump, and the College of Saint Mary established two other program records to highlight its efforts in the Central Nebraska Challenge outdoor track & field meet on Sunday.
Skanes, the reigning indoor national champion, soared a personal-best and program-record 6.12 meters on her final attempt, which is 20 feet, 1 inches, meets the national 'A' standard and is the best jump in the NAIA this season by 2¾ inches. The Omaha Northwest graduate won the event by more than a foot, competing against athletes from the NCAA Division I and II levels, as well as the NAIA.
"Imani put a stamp on the phenomenal end to her indoor season with an incredible outdoor opener,'' CSM Coach Steve Gordon Jr. said. "A new career best and program record of 6.12/20' 1" is massive, not only in distance but in meaning. The 20-foot barrier is huge for any young lady in the long jump.''
In the high jump, freshman Rayna Apley of Bennington, Neb., jumped a program-record 1.62 meters (5 feet, 3¾ inches) to place third behind NCAA Division II athletes from Nebraska-Kearney and Fort Hays State.
"Rayna made her presence known with a new program-record high jump, and placing third in a heavily NCAA-represented event,'' Gordon said "She took some very good attempts at a national qualifying height.''
In the 400 junior Ava Hilger, a David City Aquinas graduate, set a program-record, clocking 1:00.13, good for 13th place.
"Ava's focus on track & field this season is continuing to reward her; she took nearly half a second off the previous program best and nearly a full second off her previous personal best,'' Gordon said. "She works so hard. She's really earned this."
Allison Isaacson turned in a top-eight finish for the Flames, placing seventh in the triple jump at 10.99 (36- ¾).
Gordon said the meet was an excellent starting point for the outdoor season.
"I am very proud of our squad -- of course because of the performances, but more than that because of the consistency of the level of those performances,'' he said. "Good things happen when we are steady and consistent. It validates the work they have put in."
