Flames take 4th to match best-ever GPAC outdoor finish
FREMONT, Neb. – One thing is clear: the College of Saint Mary track & field program has staying power.
One year after the Flames turned in their best finish – fourth – at the Great Plains Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, they matched that finish again.
CSM on Saturday added eight more all-conference performances and four more program records at Heedum Field, finishing with 58.5 points to trail only perennial stalwarts Doane University (250.5), Dordt University (194) and Concordia University (139) in the final standings.
"I have said it all season: Our consistency will be why we excel,'' CSM Coach Steve Gordon Jr. said. "Special performances will always be great, but being consistent is what invites those moments. There is nothing like a season culminating in a program record at the conference championships. It is the pinnacle of why and how we do things."
CSM's highest finisher on Saturday was Kara Muller, who surged to the lead with a lap to go in the 1,500 and settled for second in a program-record 4:40.94, nearly four seconds faster than the program record she had held.
Carly Henderson placed third in the 3,000 steeplechase in 11:25.59.
In the 800, Olivia Elbert became the first Flame to go under 2:15, placing fourth in 2:14.93 to break her own program record.
Gozie Okafor led a 4-5-6 Flames finish in the triple jump. Okafor placed fourth at 11.36 meters (37 feet, 3¼ inches), while Allison Isaacson was a centimeter behind in fifth at 11.35 (37-3) and Imani Skanes took sixth at 11.19 (36-8½).
The top eight finishers in each individual event earn all-conference honors, and Isaacson finished the weekend with three all-GPAC nods, all in field events, as she had top-eight efforts on Friday in the pole vault and long jump.
In the 100 final, Skanes broke quickly and led at 60 meters before finishing fifth in a program-record 12.05 seconds. It broke the previous program record of 12.09 set by Savannah Horne in 2025.
The eighth Flames performance on Saturday to earn all-conference distinction came from Syd'ney Birch-George, who placed seventh in the shot put at 12.03 (39-5¾). Her best throw came on her first attempt of the finals.
Ava Hilger broke the fourth program record of the day. She placed 12th in the 400 in 59.40 to go under one minute for the first time and break Olivia Elbert's program record of 59.81 that was about a week old.
"It has been a tough outdoor season,'' Gordon said. "Weather struggles, meet postponements and moves, and the expected toll on bodies that have been trained at a high level for nine months. I'm extremely proud of what these ladies have accomplished, and I'm proud of our staff who have dialed in their training so well."
Qualifiers for the NAIA national meet will be announced in the coming days.
