Skanes places 4th, becomes two-time All-American

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Imani Skanes on Wednesday added another impressive line to the already bulging list of credentials she has compiled in her freshman season.

The College of Saint Mary standout became a two-time All-American by placing fourth in the long jump at the 45th-annual NAIA Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Karl Straus Track.

Skanes, who won the indoor national championship in March, came within 14 centimeters of her outdoor personal best, sailing 5.98 meters (19 feet, 7½ inches) on her fourth attempt of the competition. Amelia Cha of British Columbia won the event at 6.27 (20-7), while Abia Kante of Cumberlands (Ky.) was second at 6.17 (20-3) and Rosemond Owusu of Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) was third at 5.99 (19-8).

The first flight was interrupted by a considerable lightning delay, presenting challenges for all.

"All credit to Imani,'' CSM Coach Steve Gordon Jr. said. "Tough day with the lightning delay. She handled it like a pro and climbed through the ranks steadily. This was probably the best NAIA long jump competition ever. Incredibly competitive.''

In the 4 x 800-meter relay prelims, the Flames quartet of Carly Henderson, Corinne Mead, Kara Muller and Olivia Elbert finished 15th in 9:15.47 and did not advance to the final. Henderson led off in 2:16.89, Mead followed in 2:25.39, Muller was next in 2:16.62 and Elbert clocked 2:16.57 for the anchor leg.

The Flames will conclude their participation in the national meet on Thursday when Skanes and Allison Isaacson hit the runway for the triple jump at 3:30 Central.
