Flames forge tie with DWU on Senior Day
OMAHA, Neb. – It wasn't the Senior Day outcome anyone would have signed up for at the beginning of the match.
However, College of Saint Mary coach Jamison Parkhill wasn't about to complain about a 0-0 Great Plains Athletic Conference soccer tie with Dakota Wesleyan University on Saturday at the CSM complex.
"Getting a point and keeping us within striking distance of Dakota Wesleyan and potentially that six seed is huge,'' he said. "It was a very big point in terms of playoff positioning.''
DWU (5-3-7 overall) is now 4-2-4 in GPAC play with 16 points, while CSM (5-11-1 overall) is now 4-5-1 with 13 points. Entering their final regular-season match, the highest the Flames could be seeded in the eight-team GPAC tournament is sixth.
Neither team created an abundance of great scoring chances in Saturday's match. DWU outshot the Flames 10-7, including an 8-6 edge in shots on goal.
CSM keeper Jenna Brown had one outstanding save in each half, a sliding denial in the first half and a one-handed stab in the second half when a Tiger got free from close range. She registered her second clean sheet in 10 days.
"I thought we had chances,'' Parkhill said. "We were dangerous in a couple moments. They were very dangerous in a couple moments. But again, Jenna came up huge in those spots. To get two shutouts in a week and a half is huge.''
Parkhill also praised the play of freshman Hanna Snow of Pleasant Hill, Mo.
"She played a new role today, and I thought she played it really, really well,'' he said. "She helped solidify the midfield and just gave us another option. She broke up a lot of attacks and helped us build.''
The Flames honored the six seniors who will be ending their careers in a pregame ceremony: Lesli Donis, Vanessa Duncan, Reese Johnson, Abby Ridout, Aubrey Sharp and Raven Thomas.
"To see the players they've become and the people they've become, it's always hard to say goodbye to the senior class, but I'm super proud of what they've accomplished in their four years,'' Parkhill said. "We're going to miss them.''
CSM will conclude its regular season on Wednesday with a 2 p.m. GPAC match at Mount Marty University.
