Wortmann signs with CSM for cross country, track & field
OMAHA, Neb. – College of Saint Mary is excited to announce that Sophia Wortmann has signed to join the school's cross country and track and field teams in the 2026-27 academic year.
Wortmann is a senior at Crofton High School in Crofton, Neb. Her parents are Chris and Holly Wortmann.
Derek Fey, who leads CSM's cross country program, said he is thrilled to sign Wortmann.
"Sophia will be a great addition to next year's squad,'' he said. "She comes from a highly successful program and above all else, she is a leader. She is a leader on her team, in her school and in her community."
At Crofton, Wortmann ran on a Class D state runner-up cross country team and had a top individual state placing of 13th. She's also a two-time state placewinner in the 4x800 relay at the Class C state track meet.
In her free time, Wortmann enjoys crocheting, running, playing musical instruments, watching movies and theatrical performances and reading.
She chose CSM for several reasons.
"I was drawn to the occupational therapy program, the cross country team and the size of the campus,'' Wortmann said. "I was also influenced by my mom, who attended College of Saint Mary and has spoken very highly of it my whole life.''
Fey said Wortmann brings great qualities to his program.
"We are losing many seniors from this year's stellar team and are needing to fill some huge gaps in leadership,'' he said. "Sophia, along with several other incoming freshmen, are going to fit right in. Sophia has an infectious energy that is going to create a spark."
