Flames earn satisfying road victory over York

YORK, Neb. – Senior Madelyn Gaughen led the way with 21 points, eight rebounds and four steals, and College of Saint Mary evened its record at 1-1 on the young season with a 55-49 nonconference basketball victory over York University on Monday at the Freeman Center.

The victory snapped a 26-game losing streak for the Flames dating to last season and made for a happy trip back to Omaha.

"Shoutout to G (Madelyn Gaughen) as she dominated mismatches in the post,'' CSM Coach Natalie Miller said. "Freda (Moore) and Kat (Gaughen) did a phenomenal job guarding their point guard. As a team, we did a good job handling their runs and holding onto the lead in the second half.''

The key stretch of the game came midway through the third, when the Flames went on an 11-0 run to turn a 23-23 game into a 34-23 advantage. Madelyn Gaughen scored nine of her team's 11 during the run, including a 3-pointer, and Jai'La Porter added the other basket.

The Panthers (1-1 overall) chipped away and got within 49-45 on Destiny Shepherd's 3-pointer with 2:11 left in the game.

Then came the biggest shot of the contest, as senior Haley Debuse buried a 3-pointer from the left side with 1:09 left to push the lead back to seven. York got no closer than six the rest of the way, as CSM beat the Panthers for the 17th time in their last 22 meetings, dating back to 2009.

The Flames' defense held York to 25.0% shooting from the field (17 of 68). Both teams struggled from the free-throw line, with CSM making 14 of 28 (50.0%) and York 11 of 26 (42.3%).

College of Saint Mary forced 23 turnovers, but coughed it up 25 times itself.

"We had way too many turnovers because we got sped up,'' Miller said. "We'll have to focus on getting on the same page and making the simple play. We've got to clean up our free throws, too.''

Porter added 11 points, six rebounds and three assists. Moore had eight points and four rebounds, while Debuse finished with five points and seven rebounds, along with strong interior defense. Madison Keil grabbed seven rebounds.

The Flames return home to host their MH Hospitality CSM Classic on Thursday and Friday, facing Clarke University on Thursday and Peru State University on Friday, with both tips set for 5 p.m.

"Looking at our next game, we have to focus on not rushing on offense and rebounding,'' Miller said.
