Flames sweep season series from Midland
FREMONT, Neb. – Jai'La Porter poured in a career-high 28 points and Madison Keil notched her first career double-double as College of Saint Mary snapped a 16-game losing streak with an impressive 71-63 Great Plains Athletic Conference basketball win over Midland University at Wikert Event Center.
The Flames came out sharp, racing to early leads of 15-0 and 25-7 to set the tone for the game.
"As a team, we did a great job getting downhill and hunting our cuts,'' CSM Coach Natalie Miller said. "Midland played a physical game and I felt like we handled it well and were ready to make free throws.''
CSM improved to 4-23 overall and 3-18 in GPAC play, while Midland dropped to 3-24 and 2-19.
After the Flames quick start, Midland responded quickly, going on a 19-5 run to get within 30-26 with 2:30 left in the first half. But CSM scored the final five before intermission to lead 35-26 at the break.
Keil, a 5-foot-10 sophomore from Loveland, Colo., had an outstanding first half to help the visitors get started. She scored eight points and grabbed eight rebounds in the first half and finished with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Porter, a 5-6 junior from Colorado Springs, Colo., had a near-perfect first half, producing 16 points on 5 of 6 from the field and 6 of 6 from the line. She finished with 28 points on 10-of-13 shooting along with eight rebounds.
Madelyn Gaughen finished with 15 points, four rebounds and four assists, as CSM outscored its opponent 44-26 in the paint.
Lexi Barnes gave the team a boost by scoring all nine of her points in the second half, as CSM maintained leads between 10 and 16 points most of the rest of the way. It was the Flames' first victory since a 66-51 triumph over the same Warriors in Omaha on Nov. 25. CSM swept the season series after having lost 17 of the previous 18 to Midland.
"We had big contributions from Jai'La, G (Gaughen) and Madi,'' Miller said. "Defensively, we didn't rebound as well as I'd have liked us to, but I felt like we did a good job getting them out of their rhythm. Looking ahead, I want us to keep improving our rebounding and keep a focus on getting to the rim and not settling on offense.''
CSM concludes its season on Saturday with a trip to Yankton, S.D., and a 2 p.m. GPAC game against Mount Marty University.
