Flames clinch No. 6 seed with key road victory
YANKTON, S.D. – College of Saint Mary captured its third straight volleyball match on Tuesday and the reward for its effort is the No. 6 seed in the Great Plains Athletic Conference Tournament.
The Flames were at their best late in the final three sets and dispatched Mount Marty University 20-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-17 in their regular-season finale at Cimpl Arena.
CSM closed the regular season at 15-12 overall and squared its GPAC record at 8-8. As the No. 6 seed, the Flames will play at third-seeded Midland University (17-9, 12-4) in the GPAC quarterfinals on Saturday night in Fremont at 7 p.m.
After dropping the first set to the Lancers (12-14, 5-10), CSM trailed late in the second and third sets but fought back to win both. The Flames took charge midway through the fourth set to close it out.
"It was a great win on the road in a tough environment,'' CSM Coach Rick Pruett said. "I am really proud of how we are playing right now. We are showing a lot of toughness.''
Down a set and trailing 22-21 in the second, CSM scored the next two, the second one on a block by Azaria Green and Madalyn Welp. Leading 24-23, Emma Martins terminated and evened the match at a set apiece.
Down 21-19 in the third, the Flames rattled off four straight points, getting kills from Mya Weber and Chloe Kasischke, and a solo block from Welp. Kasischke's kill gave CSM a set point at 24-22, and Green converted it with a kill.
Leading 13-11 in the fourth, CSM scored six of the next seven points to take control and never looked back. Caylin Barnett and Green had two kills apiece to lead the way during that run.
Kasischke, a 5-foot-11 freshman out of Wahoo, Neb., saw her most meaningful playing time of the season and came through with a career-high nine kills, sharing the team lead.
Weber and Welp also had nine kills each and Green and Barnett contributed seven apiece in the balanced attack.
Kaitlyn Busby notched 25 assists and Kennedy Buck pitched in 14. Caitlin McCormack led with two aces, while Elen Pruett had 20 digs and Krissy Radicia 17. Green had four solo blocks and two assists, while Weber added three solo blocks.
"Mya, Madalyn and Chloe were big for us and our defense was great!'' Rick Pruett said. "We kept pressure on them and really played as a team.''
