Olsen’s hat trick powers CSM past Waldorf
FOREST CITY, Iowa – Sophomore Bella Olsen collected a hat trick, and College of Saint Mary opened Great Plains Athletic Conference soccer play with a resounding 6-1 victory over Waldorf University Saturday at Bolstroff Field.
"Proud of them!'' CSM Coach Jamison Parkhill said. "Today was a very good performance. Much closer to what we know we are capable of. They played on the front foot and pushed the advantage.''
The Flames improved to 2-6-0 overall in addition to moving to 1-0-0 in GPAC play. Waldorf dropped to 1-3-1 and 0-1-0.
Olsen, an Omaha Marian graduate, led a high-powered offense to the easy win. She scored in the 21st minute when Abby Ostergaard found her with a 44-yard pass and she knocked it in to give CSM a 3-0 lead.
In the 23rd minute, Devon Koyle made a steal and fed Olsen, who beat one defender and then punched it in for a 4-0 cushion.
Olsen completed the hat trick in the 60th minute. Jimena Estrada Gomez sent one in from the left wing and Citlali Prado's shot was deflected. Olsen was there to knock in the final goal of the match.
CSM's other three goals came in the first half, as the visitors raced to a 5-1 lead at the intermission.
The Flames opened the scoring in the 15th minute, when Prado found Ella Klusman down the right side, and Klusman centered it to Izzy Kadavy for the goal.
In the 19th minute, Prado sent a long pass down the right side to a wide-open Klusman, who scored from medium range.
CSM made it 5-1 in the 34th minute, when Reese Johnson centered a well-placed pass to Estrada Gomez, who headed in a beautiful goal to give the Flames a four-goal lead at the intermission.
"Shoutouts go to all of our goal scorers because they really needed those goals to get their seasons back on track and to attack conference head on,'' Parkhill said.
CSM dominated with a 36-4 edge in shots, including a 26-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Flames had 11 corner kicks to none for the Warriors.
"We peppered the goal and had chances to put more up, but Waldorf did a good job of cleaning up some of our chances,'' Parkhill said.
College of Saint Mary returns to action Wednesday at home for a 3 p.m. GPAC match against Concordia University.
