Flames rally past Midland for GPAC soccer victory

FREMONT, Neb. – Jimena Estrada Gomez's penalty kick in the 60th minute on Wednesday gave College of Saint Mary a hard-fought, come-from-behind 2-1 Great Plains Athletic Conference soccer victory over Midland University at Heedum Field.

"Very proud of how the girls fought for a whole 90 minutes and fought back from 1-0 down,'' CSM Coach Jamison Parkhill said. "We played a very good game.''

After falling behind in the eighth minute, CSM struck back in the 34th minute, when Abby Ostergaard put a beautiful through ball down the right side to Ella Klusman, who fired and found the back of the net from a difficult angle.

It stayed that way until the 60th minute, when Klusman was fouled in the box and was forced to leave the game with a head injury. Estrada Gomez connected on the penalty kick to give the Flames the lead.

The CSM defense stood firm in the final 30 minutes, denying Midland to improve to 3-8-0 overall and squaring their GPAC record at 2-2-0. Midland dropped to 1-7-1 and 0-4-0.

"We could have had a few more, but to get the three points at the end of the day is the biggest thing,'' Parkhill said.

Parkhill said the play of Estrada Gomez, a senior out of Omaha South, sparked the team to the win.

"Shoutout to Jimena,'' he said. "She showed up tonight and balled out.''

CSM was on the offensive throughout the match, finishing with a 17-7 edge in shots, including an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Flames also had seven corner kicks to Midland's two.

The Flames will return to action at 2:15 p.m. on Saturday in a GPAC match at Dordt University in Sioux Center, Iowa.
