OMAHA, Neb. – College of Saint Mary went deep into the match with a chance to win, but Doane University registered two goals in the final 19 minutes to defeat the Flames 2-0 in Great Plains Athletic Conference soccer on Wednesday at Papik Field.
CSM Coach Jamison Parkhill said the final stretch of the match wasn't the difference. It was the scoreless first half.
"We just didn't show up for the first 45 minutes,'' he said. "Very frustrating that we weren't up for a match like this. We were lucky to be zero-zero at the half.''
In the 72nd minute, Celeste Galvan sent in a corner kick, which found McKenna Rathbun on the back side, and she headed it in for her sixth goal of the year.
The Tigers added the icing in the 89th minute when Lexi Adams found the back of the net.
"We played better in the second half and created chances,'' Parkhill said. "However, they converted on a corner when we lost our mark. Just a very frustrating day.''
The Tigers held a slim 11-9 advantage in shots, including an 8-6 edge in shots on goal. Ella Klusman had a team-high four shots, three of which were on goal.
Doane improved to 8-6-2 overall and 6-2-1 in league play, while CSM dipped to 5-11-0 and 4-5-0.
The Flames will play their regular-season home finale on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host Dakota Wesleyan University for Senior Day.
