Morningside overtakes Flames in 4th

OMAHA, Neb. – Needing to win the fourth set Saturday night in order to force a fifth, College of Saint Mary held leads of 17-10, 19-12, 23-20 and 24-22.

At key moments, however, the Flames couldn't produce enough winning plays to take the match the distance.

Morningside University rallied past CSM 20-25, 25-22, 25-17, 27-25 in nearly two hours of Great Plains Athletic Conference volleyball at the Lied Fitness Center.

The loss denied the Flames (12-8, 5-5) a chance for a Sioux City sweep on the weekend, after they rolled past Briar Cliff University on Friday.

"It's just frustrating,'' CSM Coach Rick Pruett said. "We played a really good first set, but we just didn't play with any consistency. When you're in this conference, you have to play consistent. You don't have to play great every day, but you have to play consistent.''

Leading 19-12 in the fourth set, CSM made five errors during a 6-0 Mustang run that got the visitors back into the set. Later, Mya Weber's kill gave the Flames a pair of set points, leading 24-22, but they couldn't convert either.

The final few points were a struggle for the Flames, and the Mustangs were soon celebrating a win that moved them to 11-9 overall and 5-5 in league play.

"Two of the last three points were miscommunication errors, all controllable things,'' Pruett said. "Leading 17-10 and not winning that set, that to me is just absurd. We have to understand the importance of buckling down.''

The brightest spot for the Flames was the play of freshman Weber. The 5-foot-10 middle out of Bellevue East matched her career-high with 11 kills and hit a robust .409. She also led the Flames with one solo block and two block assists.

"Mya played a great match,'' Pruett said. "Freshman Emma Martins played another good match.''

Martins, a 5-10 lefty on the right side from Gordon-Rushville High School, had a career-high eight kills to go with a pair of block assists.

Caylin Barnett and Caitlin McCormack added 10 kills each. Elen Pruett had a match-high 29 digs and Kennedy Buck added 18. Kaitlyn Busby handed out 24 assists and Buck had 21. Krissy Radicia had three of the Flames' seven aces.

But it wasn't enough on this night.

"From a mental standpoint, we just didn't lock it in and carry it over the way we played yesterday,'' Rick Pruett said. "We did in the first set, but we had our opportunities and we squandered them.''

CSM returns on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. nonconference match in Lincoln against Nebraska Wesleyan.
