SEWARD, Neb. – The first six minutes of the soccer match told the story for College of Saint Mary on Tuesday night.
Second-seeded Concordia University blitzed the seventh-seeded Flames for two goals in the first six minutes, setting the tone for a 3-0 quarterfinal victory in the Great Plains Athletic Conference Tournament at Bulldog Stadium.
"Rough one,'' CSM Coach Jamison Parkhill said. "Concordia came out on the front foot and we didn't match their intensity. Their first two goals were the result of it.''
The Flames end their season with a 6-12-1 record, while Concordia improved to 13-1-5 and advances to Saturday's semifinal home match against third-seeded Hastings College (13-3-3).
In the third minute, Kierstynn Garner found a wide-open Evie Keller on the right side, and Keller punched it in before many of the fans were settled.
Less than three minutes later, Savannah Andrews took a pass from Elena Ruiz on the left wing and rifled one high into the right corner of the net for a quick 2-0 lead.
It stayed that way for more than 50 minutes, but in the 56th minute Taylor Slaymaker scored on the doorstep off a corner kick, with the assist going to Garner.
"We didn't create enough going forward and they pushed us back into positions we weren't comfortable in,'' Parkhill said. "We didn't do some basic things we have preached all year.''
The Bulldogs enjoyed a 17-5 edge in shots, including an 8-3 edge in shots on goal. Ella Klusman had three shot attempts, two on goal, while reigning GPAC Offensive Player of the Week Jimena Estrada Gomez had the other two shots, one on goal.
Six Flames seniors are ending their careers this season: Lesli Donis, Vanessa Duncan, Reese Johnson, Abby Ridout, Aubrey Sharp and Raven Thomas.
"We thank the seniors for all they have done,'' Parkhill said. "The work for next year begins.''
