CSM gets untracked in first victory of season

MADISON, S.D. – College of Saint Mary released some early season pent-up soccer frustration on Monday, dominating Dakota State University for a 4-1 nonconference victory at the Dan Beacom Complex.

Sophomore Ella Klusman scored two goals and added an assist, as the Flames put a 32-shot barrage on the Trojans, who managed only seven. CSM improved to 1-3-0 with the victory, while dropping Dakota State to 0-3-1.

"It was good for the group to get a result,'' CSM Assistant Coach Ed Meitzen said. "We were able to continue with the trend from the Black Hills State University scrimmage of defending better immediately after we lost possession.''

Klusman opened the scoring in the second minute, taking perfect pass from Izzie Kadavy and belting it in from the left side. In the fifth minute, Klusman sent in a corner kick and fellow Honey Creek, Iowa, native Devon Koyle flicked it into the back of the net from in front of the goal for a 2-0 lead. It was the freshman's first career collegiate goal.

It stayed that way until the half. In the 51st minute, Klusman was tackled from behind in the box. She made the ensuing penalty kick for a 3-0 cushion.

After the Trojans found the scoreboard in the 66th minute, CSM tacked on the icing. Aubree McCumber sent a pass to Abby Ostergaard in the 89th minute, and she made a long connection with Bella Olsen down the left side. Olsen beat her defender and knocked in the final goal.

"The fast start with two early goals really helped the confidence of the team, and we were able to keep that energy up throughout the game,'' Meitzen said.

CSM returns to action Wednesday when it travels to Atchison, Kan., for a 5 p.m. meeting with Benedictine College.
